How to Have Relaxed Newborn Photos: A First Time Parent’s Guide
How do you ensure that newborn photos are calm and relaxed?
If you’re expecting your first baby, you’ve probably seen beautiful newborn photos and wondered how those sessions actually happen.
Does the baby really sleep the whole time? What if they cry? What if they need to eat? What if you have no idea what to do?
The good news is you don’t need to know how to do anything.
A relaxed newborn photography session should feel less like a photoshoot you have to perform for and more like a slow morning spent soaking in your new baby.
Here are some of the questions I hear most often from first time parents and exactly how I approach newborn sessions to keep them calm, natural, and relaxed.
What if my baby cries during newborn photos?
Actually, your baby is allowed to do whatever your baby needs to do.
Newborns don't follow a schedule just because we have a camera in our hands. They need to be fed, changed, burped, cuddled, and soothed, and all of that is completely normal during a newborn session.
I don't believe in rushing through those moments to get the shot. If your baby needs you, we pause.
I also love to shoot some photos where baby is not in the "perfect" state. It is more real and you will want to remember that years from now.
Sometimes those pauses become some of my favorite parts of a session because they give you a chance to slow down and simply be with your baby.
Do I need to get my newborn on a perfect schedule before the session?
No. Please don't stress about creating a perfect schedule for photos.
Especially as a first time parent, there is already so much to think about. Your newborn session doesn't need to become another thing you have to prepare perfectly for.
I work around your baby rather than expecting your baby to work around the session.
If your little one is hungry when you arrive, we feed them. If they need a little extra cuddling, we take our time. If they fall asleep halfway through, we'll let them sleep.
The goal isn't to make your baby behave like a tiny professional model. The goal is to photograph your baby as they are right now.
What if my baby needs to breastfeed or take a bottle during the session?
You stop and feed your baby whenever they need it.
There is no need to apologize or feel like you're interrupting the session.
Feeding, rocking, burping, and soothing are all part of life with a newborn, and they can be beautiful moments to photograph too. I want you to feel completely comfortable taking care of your baby throughout your newborn photography session.
What if I'm nervous in front of the camera?
You don't need to know how to pose.
This is one of the biggest things I want first time parents to know.
You don't have to show up knowing what to do with your hands, where to stand, or how to look natural in photos. That's my job.
I use simple, natural posing and give you gentle direction when you need it. A lot of the time, that means you're simply holding your baby, looking at them, talking to them, or leaning into your partner.
The goal is never to make you feel like you're posing.
I want you to look like you, just in this beautiful, fleeting season of becoming a family.
What if my baby won't cooperate with the poses I've seen online?
That's okay. We don't need to force a pose.
Every newborn is different.
Some babies love being swaddled. Some want their hands free. Some sleep soundly while others want to be held. Some are happiest curled up on a parent's chest.
Rather than trying to make every baby fit into the same collection of poses, I pay attention to what your baby is comfortable with.
That means your gallery can still feel beautiful and intentional without your baby ever needing to be uncomfortable.
What about photos with my partner?
Those should feel just as natural.
You don't need to know how to interact with each other for the camera.
I'll give you simple direction when needed, but many of the best moments happen when you forget I'm there.
Look at your baby. Look at each other. Snuggle closer. Kiss their forehead.
Those tiny interactions are what make your photographs feel like your family rather than a collection of perfectly posed images.
What if we have a toddler too?
Your toddler does not need to sit perfectly still.
And honestly, I don't expect them to.
Adding an older sibling to newborn photos can feel intimidating, especially when you're already adjusting to life with a new baby.
I like to incorporate toddlers in gentle, age appropriate ways rather than expecting them to perform for the camera.
Sometimes that looks like sitting beside the baby. Sometimes it's a quick cuddle. Sometimes it's reading a book together, giving the baby a kiss, or simply being close to Mom or Dad.
And if your toddler wanders off?
We'll work with it.
The goal is to capture the relationship between your children, not create a perfect moment that doesn't feel like your real life.
Do newborn photos have to be completely quiet and calm?
No, and they don't have to look that way either.
Some of the sweetest photographs happen in the in between moments.
A parent calming a crying baby.
A tiny hand wrapped around Mom's finger.
Dad rocking the baby back to sleep.
A toddler climbing onto the bed for one more cuddle.
Those moments may not look perfect in real time, but they are often the moments you'll miss the most.
That's why I don't want your newborn session to be about keeping everything perfectly quiet and controlled.
I want it to feel like your family.
So, how can I make my newborn photos feel more relaxed?
Give yourself permission to stop worrying about doing it right.
You don't need a perfectly sleeping baby.
You don't need a spotless home.
You don't need to know how to pose.
You don't need to make your toddler cooperate every second.
And you definitely don't need to apologize when your baby needs you.
Come as you are. Bring the snacks. Feed your baby. Take the breaks you need. Let your toddler be a toddler.
I'll take care of the rest.
Because years from now, I don't think you'll look at your newborn photographs and wish your baby had cried less or that everyone had sat more perfectly.
You'll remember how tiny they were.
You'll remember the way they fit against your chest.
You'll remember those little hands, those sleepy stretches, and the feeling of holding the newest person in your family.
That's what I want your newborn photography session to preserve.
